As covid-19 ravages the country at a record rate, many Veterans Affairs employees say they lack the support they need to fight the disease. An investigation by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), which represents VA workers, indicates that most staff were not informed when coworkers contracted the coronavirus, about half were not advised that patients had covid-19 before health care providers served them, and some workers did not have adequate personal protective equipment to protect against infection. Civil rights officials at the Department of Health and Human Services have issued a series of measures to protect people with disabilities from health care discrimination by health care providers during the pandemic. The actions of the Office of Civil Rights, or OCR, of the Department of Health and Human Services, specifically address discrimination related to denial of treatment for people with disabilities who have COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19.
