LUBBOCK, Texas (press release) – The following is a press release from Texas Tech University:
Texas Tech University is one of 13 institutions whose teams participate virtually in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Collegiate Wind Competition, which runs June 2-11. The competition helps prepare university students for jobs in the clean energy economy by providing them with hands-on, real-world experience in wind energy technology and project development.
“Texas Tech’s collegiate wind team, Techsan Wind, is thrilled to be a part of the 2021 Collegiate Wind Competition,†said Matt Saldaña, team advisor and wind energy instructor. “Techsan Wind will also be participating in the Collegiate Wind Competition 2022. We look forward to improving on our past performance and being part of such a prestigious competition. “
This is the fourth time the Techsan Wind team has participated in the competition. Many of the Techsan Wind team are enrolled in Texas Tech’s Bachelor of Science in Wind Energy program offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
While the classroom experiences are valuable to their future employment prospects, having the opportunity to design, develop and build a wind turbine and wind farm allows the team to apply the classroom experiences to a real world project. Entering the competition also allows team members to connect with future colleagues and learn from some of the brightest minds in the wind power industry.
This year, the Techsan Wind team is participating in the Live Connection Creation Contest. The competition has teams who partner with wind industry professionals, raise awareness about wind energy in their local community, and work with local media to promote the team’s accomplishments.
The main goal of the Techsan Wind team is to disseminate more information about wind energy in the wider community of Lubbock and Texas Tech. The team seeks to generate excitement in Kindergarten to Grade 12 classrooms as well as create a strong recruiting network for future Techsan Wind team members on the Texas Tech campus. Its secondary goals include recruiting new wind energy majors / miners and developing partnerships with various groups on campus.
Other universities participating in the competition are Brigham Young University, California State University Maritime Academy, California Polytechnic State University, Johns Hopkins University, James Madison University, Kansas State University, Northern Arizona University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Maryland, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Virginia Tech University, and Washington State University-Everett.
