The development is part of a long-term agreement, which will bring new employment and career opportunities to provide a sustainable future for many people in Ayrshire.

Mainstream secured land on the facility to build the enabling infrastructure for the offshore wind farm, including the substation as well as the cable landing.

The contract is the latest step in Hunterston’s vision to build and develop a facility to serve and grow the blue, green and circular economies.

The latest deal comes just three months after Peel Ports signed a similar deal with cabling company XLCC for a major facility comprising two factories, which could generate 900 more jobs.

“Mainstream is a highly respected and credible developer of offshore assets, and we welcome their long-term commitment to Hunterston PARC.

“Their team supports our vision for Hunterston and is committed to working with us to further develop it; including the potential for green hydrogen production.

“Hunterston is one of Scotland’s largest brownfields and its largest deep-water port. This agreement demonstrates the role it can play in meeting the challenge of a green economic recovery.

Cameron Smith, Managing Director of Mainstream Offshore, said: “Mainstream is committed to working with Peel Ports to help develop the fleet in Hunterston to serve the green economy.

“As one of the first key tenants to buy into their vision, we have secured critical acreage to build our onshore connection infrastructure and will work with Peel to expand our associated hydrogen production and other facilities.

“Mainstream has developed over 20% of the UK’s offshore capacity, which is either under construction or in operation. “
