RICHMOND, Virginia – November 5, 2021 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Dominion Energy has ramped up efforts to improve a national offshore wind supply chain and build a local clean energy workforce as a result of a process of rigorous competitive sourcing to secure key contract agreements for the 2.6 gigawatt Virginia Coastal Wind Project (CVOW), the largest offshore wind farm currently under development in the United States.
Dominion Energy last year announced leading wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy as the preferred turbine supplier for the 176 14.7-megawatt turbines to be installed in the 112,800-acre commercial lease area. Charybdis, designed to be the first Jones Act-compliant offshore wind installation vessel, will be used to install these turbines, pending approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Charybdis will be homeported to Hampton Roads and driven by Americans.
“We are moving the CVOW project forward by working with industry leaders as we bring utility-scale offshore wind generation to our Virginia customers,†said Joshua Bennett, Dominion Energy vice president for offshore wind. “These contracts will allow us to manage costs for the benefit of our customers and leverage national supply chain development to deliver on our promise to create clean energy jobs at Hampton Roads.
Here is a brief summary of the recently finalized contracts:
- EEW SPC, with over 80 years of experience in producing steel pipe and corresponding pipe components, to fabricate 176 steel monopile foundations, the largest of which will be 268 feet long and weigh 1,755 tons.
- Bladt Industries to manufacture 176 transition parts, which weigh up to 800 tonnes and tie the monopile foundation and turbine together, while providing physical access to the turbines. Bladt has over 25 years of experience in the field of wind turbine foundations and offshore substations.
- Bladt Industries and Semco Maritime to manufacture components for the three offshore substations, which are multistage units weighing approximately 4,000 tonnes each, an upper platform with a helicopter landing strip 157 feet above water and supporting structures installed in the seabed.
- DEME Offshore US LLC and Prysmian Group as a consortium to provide balance of plant services, including transportation and installation of foundation and substation components, and installation of submarine cables. DEME Offshore, with extensive offshore experience, has installed more than 2,600 offshore wind turbines and 2,100 foundations around the world.
- Prysmian Group, a global leader in the power and telecommunications cable systems industry, will supply all inter-grid and export submarine cables that will provide clean and renewable wind power at sea onshore.
“The largest wind farm in Europe to date, Hornsea 1 & 2, is already at the top of our monopiles. We are now happy to announce that the largest wind farm in the United States will also be built with our foundations. With the construction of Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Dominion Energy is moving closer to its goal of being carbon neutral, in terms of power generation, by 2050, and we are happy to be able to do our part as well, â€said Heiko Mützelburg, CEO / Managing Director of EEW SPC.
“We are proud to have been selected by Dominion Energy for this contract on the basis of our experience and track record. Likewise, we are extremely proud to be part of the development of the growing US offshore wind industry, â€said Anders Søe-Jensen, CEO of Bladt Industries. . “CVOW will be America’s largest wind farm with a power of 2.6 gigawatts, creating many local construction jobs and years of operation.”
“Dominion Energy has created a visionary coastal wind project in Virginia, and we look forward to helping make the green transition in Virginia. We are proud of the contract for three 880 MW substations, which we see as a vote of confidence in Semco and Bladt. proven and proven partnership and our solid experience in delivering competitive projects within power infrastructure for offshore wind over two decades â€, said Steen Brødbæk, CEO of Semco Maritime.
“This important contract will allow us to further develop our presence in the United States, working with the local supply chain, unions and deploying local workers and in doing so, we ultimately support the growth of the US offshore wind industry, â€said Sid. Florey, President, DEME Offshore US LLC.
“Two companies, both leaders in their fields, are joining forces to provide a winning solution for Dominion Energy,†said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects, Prysmian Group. “Dominion Energy decided to award the contract to the Prysmian-DEME Offshore consortium in light of their unique combination of financial strength, experience, expertise, fleet and cable supply capabilities, which are unprecedented. in industry and fundamental to the good management of large enterprises. large-scale projects such as the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, as they reduce interface risks during the execution phase of the project. “
The monopile foundations, transition parts and turbine components will be installed on 72 acres at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT) under a 10-year lease with the Virginia Port Authority. This will allow the employment of many union jobs, such as longshoremen, longshoremen, crane operators and other building and construction trades, as well as skilled workers from the Building Union of America. North and their state branch Virginia Building Trades.
U.S.-flagged vessels compliant with the Jones Act, a century-old federal law governing maritime commerce, will be used to transport PMT components to the construction site in the CVOW rental area which begins 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach and stretches another 15 miles east into the Atlantic.
The low voltage energy generated by the wind turbines will be collected in offshore substations and transmitted to land at a higher voltage along buried submarine export cables. Once the substations are powered up, they will be served by newly created positions within Dominion Energy’s offshore wind turbine operations and maintenance team.
CVOW is a critical part of Dominion Energy’s clean energy strategy to meet the standards set out in the Virginia Clean Economy Act and to achieve the company’s net carbon dioxide and methane emissions by 2050. Once Completed in 2026, CVOW will generate enough clean, renewable energy to power up to 660,000 homes of Dominion Energy Virginia customers.
