CMA CGM loaned two boxships and a terminal for the filming of James Bond

For the 25th film in the long-running James Bond franchise, No time to die Director Cary Joji Fukunaga had access to valuable assets for one of the film’s key moments. The third container ship CMA CGM has made two container ships and a transshipment terminal in Jamaica available for extended filming. In exchange for extensive coverage of the CMA CGM logo in the footage, Fukunaga was able to film the world’s first known flight of an aircraft under the gantry arms of STS cranes.
To capture the shot, a film crew for EON Productions flew a helicopter across the row at high speed. He also temporarily occupied parts of the Kingston South Quay terminal wharf with photographic equipment, aerial arrows and other equipment.
CMA CGM identified the container ships used in the filming as the 2,200 TEUs CMA CGM Fort Saint-Georges and the 3,500 TEU CMA CGM Fort-de-France. The whole also required 1,000 containers and the participation of ten crew members.
The project benefited from the support of the company at the highest level. A team led by Tanya Saadé Zeenny, Managing Director of the CMA CGM Group and sister of CEO Rodolphe Saadé, led the operation in partnership with local staff in Kingston.
The announcement did not reveal the date the footage was shot, but the Jamaican segment of the filming of No time to die started in April 2019 and continued for about a month, according to updates from EON. The final segments of the soundstage filming ended in late 2019 – before the pandemic struck. The film was finished and its release was slated for April 2020, but like so many events, it was delayed for more than a year due to COVID-19.
The action sequence at the Kingston Terminal would be much more difficult to film today, given the ultra-tight availability of the boxships and the infrastructure that serves them. Charter rates and asset prices for vessels in this size class have skyrocketed since last year. In August, rates for 3,500 TEUs in size were reaching near historic levels of $ 65,000 per day.
The film premieres in theaters September 30 in the UK and October 8 in the US, but parts of the action footage are available in a teaser that airs Friday.
