In our special series, California Dreaming, we take a closer look at the issues facing California Dream and the people working to keep their dreams alive.

As part of its commitment to the future of clean energy, the Biden administration announced a bold move to open the Pacific coast for the world’s first offshore wind development project. Historic milestones not only strengthen the Golden State’s economy, but also help the state meet its carbon-free energy goals by 2045.

“We have the potential to become the world leader in offshore wind. This is an important step for California. We are discussing thousands of jobs, â€said the offshore wind organization. said Secretary General Adam Stern.

Kelly T, associate professor at the Sonny Astani School of Civil Environmental Engineering at USC. Sanders said: “I would like to see this as an economic boom and an investment in our future.”

“The younger generation, my generation, Generation Z, are really excited,†said Kevin J. Patel, founder of One Up Action. “This is one more step towards eliminating the fossil fuel industry. “

The offshore wind turbine technology on offer is huge. According to Sanders, each is around 900 feet tall and will be located 20 to 30 miles offshore.

Both sites are located at Morro Bay and Humboldt Bay on the central coast. These sites have the potential to serve more than 1.5 million California residents.

“Investing in clean energy gives us a community, a community of color, a marginalized community, a low income community and a breath of fresh air,†Patel said.

Many people wonder if building an offshore wind farm is environmentally safe for our abundant marine life. Experts say offshore wind turbines do not harm marine life and are optimistic the path opens the door to a clean, sustainable future.

“We have a long tradition of protecting the coastline. In fact, the California coast is a sacred resource for many, â€Stern said. “We are very optimistic about our ability to develop offshore wind in an environmentally friendly way. “
